CD-R/DVD: Disc Recording Demystified

Author: Lee Purcell

Publisher: McGraw-Hill

Date: 2000

Pages: 528

Description:

A-Z guide to data storage for video/audio pros.

Optical recording has become the sturdy workhorse of the digital information revolution. While the CD-ROM world has finally achieved relatively stability, some manufacturers are still pushing the edge of the envelope, embracing higher recording speeds for CD-RW formats and CD-R alike. The quest for the unified field theory of the optical world continues in earnest, with many companies diligently working towards designing a single piece of equipment that will both read and record the vast majority of CD and DVD formats.

This book isn't intended to be a comprehensive reference of the technical aspects of optical recording, but a practical guide to the uses and possibilities of this new technology.

IEEE Design & Test of Computers, Sep/Oct 2007

GALS Design and Validation
Globally asynchronous, locally synchronous design is practically a buzzword in industry today. The term GALS was first used in the work of Chapiro in his doctoral dissertation, "Globally-Asynchronous Locally-Synchronous Systems" (Dept. of Computer Science, Stanford Univ., 1984), in which he provided a solution using pausible-clock circuitry. Since then, the term has gained popularity in both academia and industry. However, the tools, verification techniques, and testing methodologies for asynchronous designs are not as widespread as for synchronous digital design, leading to the hitherto limited usage of GALS design approaches even after more than 20 years from Chapiro's introduction.

Cell Broadband Engine Debugging for Unknown Events
The architecture and design of debugging logic for high-speed processor chips is somewhat of an art, requiring the design of logic to isolate events that have not yet occurred. In fact, the goal is for such events never to occur, but history has shown that there are usually a few problems that need debugging.

The Psychology of Electronic Test
Mullainathan and Thaler define behavioral economics as "the combination of psychology and economics that investigates what happens in markets in which some of the agents display human limitations and complications."

The Embedded Systems Landscape
What makes high-performance embedded computing so difficult is not just the performance levels but achieving that performance in the face of two major requirements: real time and low power.

Using DaVinci Technology for Digital Video Devices
It's not practical for one SoC processor to fit all equipment and meet today's aggressive performance, power, and cost targets. The DaVinci integrated portfolio of processors, software, and tools offers support for developing a broad spectrum of optimized digital video equipment.

Software-Defined Radio Prospects for Multistandard Mobile Phones
A multitude of existing and evolving cell phone standards, coupled with the need to react quickly to market requirements, is radically changing the system architect's task. Two alternative approaches to classic ASIC-centered and DSP-assisted designs have emerged: reconfigurable architectures and DSP-centered and accelerator-assisted architectures.

Hardware Bible

The Winn L. Rosch Hardware Bible provides a background on how things work, puts competing technologies, standards, and products in perspective, and serves as a reference that provides quick answers for common computer and technology questions. It functions as a buying guide, telling not only what to buy, but why. It also lays the foundation for upgrading or repairing a computer, but stops short of the step-by-step mechanics of the process. The chief purpose of the Hardware Bible remains educational. Some new features in this edition include rewritable DVD technology as well as Blu-ray Discs, wireless networking including 802.11a and 802.11b, Bluetooth wireless communications, and extended coverage of digital cameras, scanners, and telecommunications...and much more!
